Our Band of Beagles |
|
We brought our first beagle home in May 2002. We got Diamond (Ch. Waskasoo's Diamond Girl) from Waskasoo Kennels in Red Deer, Alberta. Bev Davies-Fraser was recommended to us by a relative who showed dogs and had gotten to know Bev. Bev is an experienced and reputable breeder of beagles (and austrailian shepherds). We were very fortunate that she allowed us to have one of her show quality dogs and we went on to show Diamond at dog shows until she received her championship. Later in 2002 we brought Molson into our household. We had wanted a red and white dog and had found a backyard breeder in Florida over the internet. We did not at that time appreciate the differences between show quality and those that are not. We wanted to show Molson but it was quickly apparent that he was too big for the breed standard (15 inches) so we were unable to show him. It taught us a valuable lesson about getting a dog from a reputable and recognized breeder. Do not get us wrong, we love Molson and would not part with him for anything. But he was not what we were looking for at the time. He has turned out to be a real joy in our lives. He is very obedient, a great ball player and Rick has taken him in obedience competitions and is also working on agility competitions with him. However, you get what you pay for and you need to research your dog and the breeder you are dealing with. All of our dogs are house pets. We keep them in our house with us. We also crate train our puppies before they go to their new homes. It is easier to housetrain a dog with crate training. We also work with our puppies on some basic obedience training and depending on the numbers, we will also try to have them take some obedience classes. Socialization is an important part of any puppy's upbringing and we work hard to give them a well rounded social experience with other dogs and with people before they leave our home. Our objective is to find good homes for all of our dogs. This means screening possible owners to see first if a beagle is the breed for them and then trying to match the personality of the dog with the family that wants to add the beagle to their home. We ask a lot of questions and we also use a questionaire to help us find out the information that we think is important. We have a contract that we enter into with all our owners. We provide a 30 day return and a health guarantee on our dogs. We also make a point of staying in contact with the owners of our dogs and often host puppy parties at our home to bring owners and dogs together for fun and sharing. We have been fortunate to have a number of our puppies to date go on with dog show competitions and we Diamond has had 10 of her puppies go onto become Conformation champions (and a couple of them are still competing to that end). Her daughter Ch. Jozee's Amber Dawn has also had one litter of puppies and 2 of those puppies are Conformation Champions. We continue to look to breed some of our females (provided they have met certain standards that we impose that make them breeding capable in our eyes). To date we have tended to have one litter per year. Our dogs live in Winnipeg, Calgary, Vancouver, Regina, Saskatoon and we even have dogs that have gone to live in Dallas and New Orleans. We hope that you will enjoy your beagle experience (wherever you may get you merry hound from). We know that we have and continue to do so! Rick and Donna |
